New Delhi: Olympic bronze medalist Bajrang Punia created history on Sunday. He won the bronze medal in the men’s 65 kg weight category at the World Championships event being played in Belgrade. He defeated Sebastian Rivera of Puerto Rico 11-9 to win his fourth medal at the World Championships. With this, wrestler Bajrang Punia became the only Indian to win four medals at the World Wrestling Championships.
Third Bronze Medal in World Championships
Bajrang, who won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year, lost in the quarterfinals to John Michael Diakomihalis of USA. Bajrang then qualified for the bronze medal event through the repechage round. This is Bajrang’s third bronze medal at the World Championships. The Indian wrestler had earlier won bronze in 2013, silver in 2018 and bronze in 2019.
Won only two medals
India had fielded a 30-man squad for the ongoing World Championships, but did poorly, bagging just two medals. Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Ravi Kumar Dahiya was out early and failed to secure a podium finish.
Apart from Bajrang, Vinesh Phogat won her second World Championship bronze medal in the women’s 53kg category. Vinesh had won the bronze medal by defeating Emma Malmgren of Sweden 8-0 here.
