A 35-year-old youth from a hostage district in Saudi Arabia for more than a year has returned home after being freed with the help of the Indian Embassy located there. The police gave this information here on Saturday. According to the police, Rakesh Upadhyay (35), a resident of Sonpur village under Koirana police station area of ​​the district, used to work as a plumber in a firm in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He told that he had gone to Saudi Arabia in 2019 on a two-year contract which expired on May 20, 2021.

Bhadohi Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr Anil Kumar said that Rakesh Upadhyay had told his family that he got only one year’s salary despite doing all the work. Upadhyay told his family that he was neither getting salary nor got his passport back so that he could return home after his acama (green card in Saudi Arabia) expired on June 8. He claimed that he was locked in a room.

The Superintendent of Police said that in this regard, Rakesh’s younger brother Kamlesh Upadhyay had met the station in-charge Jai Prakash Yadav and requested him for help.

The SP said, “I gave complete information about the incident to the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia.” He told, “Acting on the information, the embassy summoned the owner of the firm with the help of the local police. Where the embassy got an assurance that Upadhyay would be allowed to return home after paying one year’s salary of Rs 4.5 lakh.

Kumar said, “Even after this, the company stopped him by saying that work, only then you will get money and the contract will be extended for two years. Seeing the matter getting complicated, the police wrote several letters to the embassy and the firm.

He said that meanwhile on July 1 and 3, the Indian Embassy was informed in this regard with the help of a tweet. He said that due to these efforts, Upadhyay was freed on July 7.

The official said that Rakesh Upadhyay reached the Delhi airport on the night of July 14 and from there he reached his home in Sonpur village of Koirauna police station on Saturday.
