Jhulan Goswami, who has become synonymous with fast bowling in women’s cricket, will play the last international match of her career at Lord’s today. Team India has taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. Now Indian players will take to the field for the first time on England soil with the intention of giving a memorable farewell to their ‘Jhullu Di’ by making a clean sweep.
It is every cricketer’s dream to play at least one match in the Mecca Lord of Cricket. Scoring a century or taking five wickets is a different matter. Not everyone is destined to play the last match of their career here. Sunil Gavaskar (though he played his last first-class match here) did not get this opportunity. Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Glenn McGrath also did not get the opportunity to play the last match of their career at Lord’s.
Mithali Raj, who played with Jhulan Goswami for almost 20 years, could not even retire from the field. Now call it destiny or just a coincidence that Jhulan will play his last match at Lord’s. There could not have been a better farewell to this great player of five feet 11 inches. When she walks into the field to play the final match, everyone will be giving her a guard of honour, standing by the MCC site.
