King Drupad of Panchal and Guru Dronacharya were very good friends, but due to some reason they became hostile. To take revenge on Guru Dronacharya, King Drupada organized a yagya. He got a son from that Yagyakund. At the same time a girl was born from the same Yagyakund which was very beautiful. Since she was born from the same Yagyakund, she was called the daughter of King Drupada. At the time when that girl was born, there was an Akashvani that this girl was born for the destruction of the Kshatriyas and the destruction of the Kauravas. King Drupada named his son Dhrishtadyumna and daughter named Draupadi. Draupadi was very beautiful. But his complexion was Shyamal, so he is also called Krishna.

Draupadi was the daughter of a sage in a previous life and with the desire of her husband, she had pleased Lord Shiva by doing penance. Draupadi wished Lord Shiva for a husband who had five qualities, due to which Lord Shiva had given her a boon that in the next life she would get 5 husbands and each husband would have one quality. Draupadi was the princess of Panchal kingdom, hence she is also called Panchali. Apart from this, Draupadi is also called Drupadakanya, Sairandhri, Parshti, Mahabharati, Nityayuvani, Malini and Yojnagandha. Draupadi’s swayamvara was won by Pandu’s son Arjuna, but due to the orders of Mother Kunti, she was called the wife of the five Pandavas. Draupadi got a son each from the five Pandavas. Who were Prativindhya, Sutasoma, Srutakarma, Satanika, Srutasena. But all those sons die during the war of Mahabharata.

Draupadi’s Swayamvar

King Drupada of Panchala wanted to get his daughter Draupadi married to a great mighty prince. Pandu’s son Arjun was the best archer and King Drupada wanted to get his daughter married to him, but he got the news that Pandu’s sons had died. He wondered how he would find a suitable groom for Draupadi. Then he organized Draupadi’s swayamvara for this in the Panchal court itself and also put a condition for it. A pillar was erected in the center of the court, on which was a circular circle. A wooden fish was stuck in that circular circle which was moving at a high speed. A vessel full of water was kept under that pillar. Seeing the image of the fish in that water-filled vessel, with the help of bow and arrow, he had to aim in his eye. He said that the prince who hits the right target on the fish will be married to Draupadi.

King Drupada had made all the preparations for his daughter’s swayamvara. He had invited many great kings of the country and their princes. All enter the Panchal court for Swayamvar. At that time the Pandavas lived in the forest like Brahmins, they had an enlarged beard and were also wearing Brahmins. When the Pandavas got the news of Draupadi’s swayamvara, they also entered the Panchal court. Duryodhana, Karna and Shri Krishna also enter the swayamvara. Draupadi enters the court with her brother Dhrishtadyumna on an elephant. She was looking very beautiful. All the princes present in the Raj Bhavan were very impressed to see her beauty. Winning this competition in everyone arose the desire to marry Draupadi. On seeing Draupadi, all the kings show their valor with the desire to marry her, but in this very difficult task, they all get defeated one by one.

Karna was a special friend of Duryodhana, so he joined Draupadi’s swayamvara with Duryodhana. They also come forward to show their might. Interesting facts about Karna’s life Read here.

But Draupadi stops them and says that – “I will not marry the son of a charioteer”.

Karna does not tolerate this humiliation of his own and because of this he leaves the swayamvara. Many kings get defeated on seeing it. King Drupada is very sad to see that no mighty man is present here to marry his daughter. Then Arjuna arrives in the guise of Brahmins to do that task. No one can recognize them. All the princes present there protest that how a Brahmin can be a part of this competition. But seeing the confidence of that Brahmin, no one dares to say anything. Arjun completed that task very easily by breaking the target. Draupadi was very pleased to see this and went to the garland and put it directly on Arjuna’s neck.

All the princes are jealous of Arjuna and attack him, when Pandu’s son Bhima comes forward to save Arjuna from him. The five Pandavas, including Bhima and Arjun, easily defeat all those princes and leave with Draupadi. Draupadi’s brother Dhrishtadyumna follows them to find out who they are.

When the Pandavas reach their hut. Then he tells his mother Kunti that – “Look, mother, what have we brought”.

Kunti tells them that – “Whatever you have brought, distribute it among yourselves”. Because Kunti thinks that they have brought something to eat.

When she sees that it is a bride who is Arjuna’s wife. Kunti is very sad that what she has said. According to the custom, the Pandavas have to obey every word of their mother, whatever they said, obey them. Draupadi will be called the wife of the five brothers. Then Shri Krishna comes there and tells Mother Kunti that – “Draupadi had done penance to Lord Shiva to get a husband full of all virtues in her previous life, and she had wished for a husband with five qualities as a boon. Then Lord Shiva had given her a boon that in the next life she would get five husbands and each husband would have one quality. After listening to Shri Krishna, Kunti agreed with him and thus Draupadi came to be called the wife of the five Pandavas.

Dhrishtadyumna, who was chasing the Pandavas, saw all this, and went to his father and said to him – “Father! I have brought good news for you, that mighty brahmin who married Draupadi is none other than Arjuna, the son of Pandu. King Drupada was very happy to hear this. But when Dhrishtadyumna told his father that Draupadi was the wife of the five Pandavas, King Drupada was very sad to hear this because it was against the law. At that time sage Vyasa came there, he said to King Drupada – “Though such marriage is not allowed in the holy texts but it is a special marriage which is a boon of Lord Shiva himself which Draupadi has got so it is not against the law. Is”. Rishi Veda Vyasa Read about here.

King Drupada agrees with the words of sage Vyasa and arranges the marriage of his daughter. The five Pandavas enter the Raj Bhavan with their mother Kunti. Then there Yudhishthira gives his real introduction. King Drupada is very happy with this because he wanted to get his daughter Draupadi married to Arjuna and the same thing happened.
