He got a son from that Yagyakund. At the same time a girl was born from the same Yagyakund which was very beautiful. Since she was born from the same Yagyakund, she was called the daughter of King Drupada. King Drupada named his son Dhrishtadyumna and daughter named Draupadi. Draupadi was very beautiful. But his complexion was Shyamal, so he is also called Krishna.
Draupadi was the daughter of a sage in a previous life and with the desire of her husband, she had pleased Lord Shiva by doing penance. King Drupada of Panchala wanted to get his daughter Draupadi married to a great mighty prince. Pandu’s son Arjun was the best archer and King Drupada wanted to get his daughter married to him, but he got the news that Pandu’s sons had died. He wondered how he would find a suitable groom for Draupadi. Then he organized Draupadi’s swayamvara for this in the Panchal court itself and also put a condition for it. A pillar was erected in the center of the court, on which was a circular circle. A wooden fish was stuck in that circular circle which was moving at a high speed. A vessel full of water was kept under that pillar. Seeing the image of the fish in that water-filled vessel, with the help of bow and arrow, he had to aim in his eye. He said that the prince who hits the right target on the fish will be married to Draupadi.
King Drupada had made all the preparations for his daughter’s swayamvara. He had invited many great kings of the country and their princes. All enter the Panchal court for Swayamvar. At that time the Pandavas lived in the forest like Brahmins, they had an enlarged beard and were also wearing Brahmins. Arjun completed that task very easily by breaking the target. Draupadi was very pleased to see this and went to the garland and put it directly on Arjuna’s neck.
All the princes are jealous of Arjuna and attack him, when Pandu’s son Bhima comes forward to save Arjuna from him. The five Pandavas, including Bhima and Arjun, easily defeat all those princes and leave with Draupadi. Draupadi’s brother Dhrishtadyumna follows them to find out who they are.
