Devendra Fadnavis: Fadnavis should become the Chief Minister… Maharashtra BJP President’s statement intensifies political movement

Mumbai: The statement of BJP’s Maharashtra unit president Chandrashekhar Bawankule has created a political stir. Bawankule on Sunday said Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should become the chief minister for the overall development of the state as long as he is the party’s state unit president. Bawankule’s statement comes a few months after his predecessor Chandrakant Patil said that the party had decided with a heavy heart to make Shiv Sena rebel leader Eknath Shinde the chief minister instead of Fadnavis.

Chandrakant Patil is currently a cabinet minister in the Shinde-led government. Bawankule’s remarks have incensed the opposition parties and according to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) shows that the present Chief Minister Shinde is of no importance in the eyes of the BJP.

At a public function in Nagpur, Bawankule said, ‘…as long as I am the state unit president of BJP, Fadnavis should become…’. But the BJP leader left the sentence incomplete and then paused for a while.

After several people in the audience shouted the word ‘Chief Minister’, Bawankule continued with his speech saying, “We all need to work in such a way that he (Fadnavis) gets the chief minister’s post.” It is not about getting him a post, but it is for the overall development of the state of Maharashtra.

Fadnavis said that if any one person can define the future of Maharashtra, it is Devendra ji. Earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut had said on Saturday that the Shinde-led government would not be able to survive till February next year.
