The court refused to accept the explanation of businessman Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, that he remained in Dubai for a medical emergency in August this year. “Issued notice to Vadra and directed him to explain why the FD deposited by him should not be forfeited in violation of the stipulated conditions,” the court said.

Rouse Avenue Court Special Judge Nilofer Abida Parveen issued a show-cause notice to Vadra, saying she was unable to accept the claim. “It is clear from the copy of the itinerary and travel tickets on 22nd August that Vadra stayed in Dubai from 25th August to 29th August and thereafter traveled to London on 29th August, while he was not to stay in Dubai under the stipulated conditions,” the court said. Vadra was allowed to travel to the UK on August 12 via the United Arab Emirates, Spain and Italy for four weeks.

He left for UK on 25 August via UAE and returned to India on 8 September within the stipulated period. Before the journey he filed an undertaking along with an application giving full details of the places of travel, flight tickets and addresses of the places of stay.

Vadra’s lawyers told the court that Vadra stayed in the UAE before starting his onward journey. Because he had Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in his left leg and was advised to take proper rest between long-haul flights.
