The Border Roads Organization (BRO) is developing border areas of Arunachal Pradesh to counter China’s aggressive behavior amid standoff with China in Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh.BRO is engaged in major infrastructural development works along the border areas and The government has planned to connect all the border villages of Arunachal Pradesh with roads for better connectivity.

Development being done under Vartak project

Apart from road connectivity, BRO is also involved in the construction of two important tunnels in Tawang and West Kameng districts of Arunachal Pradesh. These tunnels will act as a game changer for the Indian security forces in view of the security issues of the international border. BRO is engaged in all infrastructural development works under Project Vartak. According to BRO officials, the construction of the Nechiphu Tunnel, a unique 500-metre-long D-shaped single tube tunnel on the Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) road in West Kameng district, is underway at an altitude of 5,700 feet. Double lane tunnel. Its construction work is nearing completion and the construction work of Sela Pass tunnel will also be completed in next 5-6 months.

Two-way traffic facility in the tunnel
The Nechifu tunnel will facilitate two-way traffic and will be equipped with modern lighting and security features. The tunnel has been built to avoid the extreme foggy conditions prevailing around the Nechifu Pass. Heavy fog has been a hindrance to normal traffic and military convoys for several decades. The Nechifu tunnel will be provided with state-of-the-art electro-mechanical system which includes fire fighting equipment, auto illumination system and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) controlled monitoring system. Elevated footpaths will also be made on both sides for the safe movement of pedestrians in this tunnel. The footpath will have pipes for power cables, optical fiber cables and utility lines to strengthen the infrastructure of civic amenities.

Under Project Vartak, BRO is also engaged in the construction works of another strategic tunnel, the double tube (1,555 m and 980 m) Sela Tunnel Project on the same road. Brigadier Raman Kumar, Chief Engineer of Vartak in an exclusive interview with ANI said that the existing Sela Pass road is difficult for heavy vehicular movement during the winter season. He said that now with the construction of Sela Pass tunnel, traffic would be facilitated throughout the year. Heavy vehicles going to this area, whether of security forces or carrying material from private industry, will be able to pass through Sela tunnel easily and their access to Tawang will be open. Along with this, tourism will also get a boost. This is a very important tunnel. BRO is feeling very happy and proud to give this to the nation. He also said that apart from the roads, we have two important tunnels.
